Which iPhones can install this IPA?

Drop in an .ipa to see how it is signed, when its profile expires and which devices it covers. Paste a tester's UDID to check their phone is on the list.

Why an IPA won't install

When a tester taps install and nothing happens, or iOS says it is Unable to Install, it is almost always one of these. The inspector checks each of them.

  1. 1

The device isn't in the profile

Ad Hoc and Development builds only open on devices whose UDID was registered before the profile was made. Adding a device later means regenerating the profile and exporting again.

  2. 2

    The profile has expired

Once the expiry date passes, the app stops opening, even on phones where it worked yesterday.

  3. 3

It was exported for the App Store

An App Store export only installs through TestFlight or the store. For a direct link you need the Ad Hoc or Development method.

  4. 4

The profile belongs to another app

If the profile's App ID doesn't cover the bundle ID, iOS refuses the install.

  5. 5

There is no profile at all

Simulator builds and unsigned exports carry no profile, so no real device can run them.

Once the build checks out, you can share the IPA with an install link. For the full device registration routine, see registering iOS devices.

Questions

Do you upload my IPA?

No. The file is read inside your browser tab. We open the zip, read the app's Info.plist and the embedded.mobileprovision file, and show you what is in them. Nothing is sent to us, so the size of the build doesn't matter.

How do I find an iPhone's UDID?

Plug the iPhone into a Mac and open Finder. Click the phone in the sidebar, then click the grey line under its name until it shows the UDID. Right click to copy it. In Xcode it is under Window, Devices and Simulators, labelled Identifier. The Settings app on the phone doesn't show it.

What's the difference between Ad Hoc and Development?

Both install on registered devices only. A Development build also needs Developer Mode turned on in Settings on iOS 16 and later, and lets a debugger attach. Ad Hoc is the one meant for testers.

I added the UDID but it still says not in the profile.

Registering a device doesn't change profiles that already exist. Regenerate the profile in your Apple Developer account (or let Xcode do it), then archive and export the build again. Check the new file here.

Why does it say the UDID isn't shaped right?

UDIDs are either 40 letters and numbers, or 25 characters like 00008110-001A2B3C4D5E801E. Serial numbers and ECIDs look similar but are different, and a profile will never contain them.

How many devices can one profile hold?

Apple allows 100 devices of each type (iPhone, iPad and so on) per membership year. Removing a device only frees its slot when the membership renews.
